Hijama in the Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,

“The best medicines you may treat yourselves with are cupping and sea incense.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5696)

Cupping is an old practice. We treat it with modern standards.

Hijama, or wet cupping, is a traditional therapy practised for centuries. Cups create suction on the skin, and light cuts then allow a small amount of blood to draw out.

Your sessions are with Dr Hashem Ali, who has practised hijama for six years. He will ask about your health first, explain each step as he goes, and tell you honestly if cupping is not right for you.

Hijama (wet cupping)

Suction, light skin cuts with a single-use sterile blade, then a second round of suction. Done at the traditional points or wherever Dr Hashem advises after your consultation.

Mobile group appointments are available across the GTA for groups of 4 or more. We are based in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Message us to arrange.

Hygiene and safety come first

Wet cupping breaks the skin, so infection control is not optional. We ask about your health before every session, and if hijama is not safe for you, we will say so and will not go ahead.

Infection control at every session

  • New sterile single-use blades, disposed of in a sharps container after use
  • Fresh gloves for every client
  • Skin cleaned before and after cupping
  • Cups and treatment surfaces cleaned and disinfected between clients, or replaced if single-use

Speak to your doctor first, and tell us before we start, if you

  • Are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • Take blood thinners or have a bleeding or clotting disorder
  • Have anaemia, low blood pressure or diabetes
  • Have a heart condition or a weakened immune system
  • Have a fever or infection, or are recovering from surgery
  • Have a skin infection, open wound or sunburn where cupping would go

What happens at a cupping visit

  1. Consultation

We ask about your health, medication and what you want from the session. If cupping is not right for you, we say so.

  2. Preparation

You lie down and the area is cleaned. Cups, blades and gloves come out of sealed packs in front of you.

  3. Cupping

Cups stay on for a few minutes at a time. You can ask us to stop or ease off at any point.

  4. Aftercare

The area is cleaned and covered. You leave with written aftercare instructions and a number to call with questions.

Ruqyah

Ruqyah is the practice of seeking help and protection through the words of Allah and the authentic supplications taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

Ruqyah is offered separately from hijama. Message us to ask about it before anything is booked.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

Most people feel a strong pulling or tightness from the suction. The cuts in wet cupping are very light and usually feel like a scratch. Tell us if it is too much and we will adjust.

What are the round marks, and how long do they last?

The suction brings blood to the surface and leaves round red or purple marks. They usually fade within a few days to two weeks.

Are there better days to have hijama?

Many people choose the 17th, 19th or 21st of the lunar month, following narrations about the best days. Tell us if you would like to book around this and we will do our best to fit you in.

Should I eat before my appointment?

Have a light meal and drink water. Avoid coming on a very full or completely empty stomach.

What should I do after?

Keep the area clean and dry, avoid hot baths and heavy exercise for the rest of the day, and drink water. You will get full written instructions at your visit.

How often can I come?

It depends on you and the type of cupping. Dr Hashem will suggest a schedule after your first session.
